Skyline Review

Have you seen the trailers for Skyline? If yes there’s not really much to be said about it that you haven’t already gleaned from the trailers. Though I don’t suppose everyone has seen the trailers and I should say some more about it.

The film appears to jump straight in to the action, with a load of alien lights shooting down from the sky in to LA. Then a couple wakes complaining it can’t be morning already, then the woman rushes from the bed to puke in an obvious “she’s pregnant” hint drop. Then we hear screams from the other room and find there’s light shining through the window and someone has disappeared, and while staring out the window there’s something obviously going wrong with him, he has contact lenses and make up to let you know. His girlfriend stops him from entering the light and then it jumps back in time 15 hours to show you how this rubbish story began.

We see Jarrod and Elaine arriving in LA for Terry’s birthday, and that’s basically the entire set up. Terry is a big shot in the music industry and they enjoy life in his penthouse for a while having a big party. We find out Terry’s cheating on his wife and well don’t really care, I didn’t really find myself caring about anyone in the film to be honest. After the party we get back to where we started and the alien invasion.

Really the whole invasion is seen from the point of view of Jarrod, Elaine, Terry, his wife and his assistant/mistress inside the penthouse. Just don’t really get a wider view of what’s going on. You just see LA get a pretty good battering with some fighting back that gets them nowhere.

I spent the film wondering why I was judging the film so harshly, I mean it wasn’t doing anything really terrible. It seemed like it should be a decent turn your mind off and watch film, but I just didn’t like it. There was a party scene near the beginning that looked like the recent Kane & Lynch game, really grainy and streaky lights, I don’t know if it was a stylistic choice or just horrible cinematography but that scene really put me off.  Then as the film went on I just liked it less and less. I didn’t like the characters, I didn’t like the writing and dialogue, I didn’t like the ending.

By the end of the film I felt like I’d rolled my eyes so much they would fall out. I thought they may go for a more daring ending than most American films, only to turn around and go with the expected false hope ending. If you’re going to see it at least be drunk when you do.

Score 1.5/5
